Science and the Sky: 3 Famous Astrology Myths, Calmly Explained

Myth 2: 'The full moon makes everyone more agitated, aggressive, or unable to sleep'

Few popular beliefs are as old as this one. The word 'lunatic' itself, in several languages, comes straight from luna, dating back to a time when people believed the Moon literally disturbed the human mind. It's such a culturally ingrained idea that it still survives today in hospital wards, police stations, and teachers' lounges: 'must be a full moon tonight.'

So what does science actually find when it goes looking for this connection? A study that tracked sleep and behavior in nearly six thousand children across different continents found no significant impact of the lunar phase on children's behavior. Several large-scale reviews of scientific studies, including a widely cited one from 2005, reached the same conclusion: when the data is examined rigorously, the correlation between the Moon's cycle and human behavior simply doesn't hold up.

Even topics that seemed more 'biologically logical' to link to the Moon, like the menstrual cycle, didn't survive the data test: a study that tracked 74 women across 980 cycles found no statistical association whatsoever between the lunar calendar and menstruation.

Still, there's a lovely nuance to this story that deserves to be told rather than simply dismissed: more recent research suggests the full moon may, in fact, subtly affect sleep quality — somewhere between 15 and 30 fewer minutes of sleep on average, which is measurable, but is a far cry from 'lunar madness.' When it comes to psychiatric crises or spikes in crime, the patterns found are weak and generally disappear once other factors — like weekends, holidays, and weather — are factored into the statistical calculations.

So why do so many people swear up and down that they can 'feel' the difference? A 1985 study that analyzed 37 papers on the topic offered a delightful clue: a good chunk of the 'meltdowns' and 'crazy nights' people remembered actually lined up with weekends — not moon phases. It's the classic confirmation bias at work: the human mind tends to hold on tightly to the times a belief 'proved true' and quickly forget the countless calm, uneventful full moons.

None of this means the Moon has no power over us at all — it moves entire oceans, after all, and symbolically it remains a precious compass for understanding our emotional cycles, as any student of astrology well knows. It's just that, so far, there's no solid scientific evidence that it 'drives crowds mad' on one particular night of the month.
